These stays have a period appropriate wooden busk at the front, which is removable for washing. Besides this busk, this piece uses cotton cording as it's primary support system, which means it is significantly softer than a steel or plastic boned corset. This also means it is not meant to be tight-laced, just provide some shaping and support. 

There are three layers of fabric used in the construction of these stays: the outer two layers are a supportive coutil, while the lining is a lightweight cotton.
